Born in Coylton, the son of a colliery manager, Bryden moved to London where he attended the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He travelled in Italy and Spain producing a series of etchings based on his travels.
Robert Bryden was born in Coylton, Ayrshire on 11th June 1865 and died at Lyndhurst, 14 Maybole Road, Belmont, Ayr on 22nd August 1939. Robert had two elder sisters Elizabeth and Margaret, and a younger brother Thomas. Margaret, the younger sister, died in infancy. Elizabeth never married and was living with Robert in Ayr at the time of her death in 1909. At the time of Robert's death, younger brother Thomas was staying with him.

Robert Bryden (1865? 1939) was a Scots artist and sculptor. He was born in Coylton in South Ayrshire, Scotland. After a period working in the office of Hunter & Morris, architects in Ayr, he moved to London where he stayed for fifteen years studying, at the RSA and the Royal Academy, making a living from commissions and teaching art.
