- After a long illness, Catherine J. Brydon of Fairfax, VA, formerly of Westbrook, Maine, beloved wife of Donald J. Brydon, passed away on June 6, 2011.
Catherine (McDonough) Brydon was born in Portland on August 9, 1928, the daughter of Michael E. and Mary (Conley) McDonough. She attended Cathedral (Cavanaugh) Grammar School, Cathedral High School and graduated from Northeastern Business College in Portland.
She worked as an Executive Secretary in Sales for Suburban Propane and retired two years after marriage to raise her family. She was involved in many community and volunteer activities, serving on the Board of Westbrook District Nursing and as co-Chair of the United Way of Westbrook for two consecutive years. Mrs. Brydon also volunteered at the Prides Corner School library and was very active in the PTA, serving as Treasurer.
She was a communicant of Cathedral and St. Edmund's Church and taught religious classes for elementary school-aged children for several years.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, five sisters, Mary, Alice, Irene, Theresa and twin sister Ruth; two brothers, Thomas and Edward; and her granddaughter Allison Grace Sweeney.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by a daughter, Dawn (Brydon) Sweeney and son-in-law Timothy Sweeney of Oakton, VA; a son, Steven Brydon and daughter-in-law Lynne Brydon of North Conway, NH; four grandchildren, Lauren, Merideth and Matthew Brydon and Kevin Sweeney; one brother, Richard, of Portland and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 P.M. on Wednesday, June 22nd at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, June 23rd at the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Interment will be private in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
