His father, also named George Wingham, emigrated from Sussex, England, in the mid-19th Century to Waterloo County where he farmed near Trussler's Road, before relocating to Hanover, ON. Widowed, he married Elizabeth Martin who bore him one son, George Martin Wingham. Elizabeth Martin's father was Isaac Martin who bought a saw mill and later built a flour mill at what is now Shade's Mill in Cambridge, ON. Helen's great-grandfather, Abraham Martin, emigrated from Pennsylvania in 1825 to Waterloo County where he settled in Doon and built a saw mill.
