  • Notes
    • According to the reminiscences of Wilhelmine Sias in "The Family and Childhood of Wilhelmine Ramsay Hogg Sias": ...my great-grandfather, Francis Hogg, was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland. Of their life in Scotland I know nothing definite, but knowing the locality -- Selkirkshire, Scotland -- ... In Scotland, though occupying a modest grade in the social scale, the Hoggs were of old and respectable family... They are said to have claimed descent from Haug, a more or less mythic Viking. There was a marked Scandinavian element among them.... Great-grandfather Francis Hogg and his family, including two sons, James the oldest, and a younger son named George, sailed with other families in the "Argus" of Workington, England, in June of the year 1829, for the New World. The voyage took nine weeks and two days, and they were bound for Galt, Ontario, Canada.

Also from "Reminiscences of the early History of Galt and the Settlement of Dumfries in the Province of Ontario", by James Young, TORONTO : HUNTER, ROSE AND COMPANY MDCCCLXXX.
      in Chapter VI, pg 60

Many of the principal settlers of Dumfries came in about 1829. We learn from Mr. William Cowan, River Road, that the following well-known Dumfries families all sailed in the "Argus" of Workington, England, on the 3rd of Jun, 1829: those of Francis Hogg, Walter Cowan, James Cowan, George Barrie and Hector Rennelson.
