Notes: A farm property thats now called Eldinhope. Altrieve (awl-treev) n. farm on the Altrieve Burn, on the road between Tushielaw Inn and the Gordon Arms, which was the last home of the Ettrick Shepherd. Robert Ker had a ‘tack’ for the farm in 1498. The Scotts of Thirlestane
were ‘kindly tenants’ of these lands, buying them
outright from Alexander Lord Home in 1590. The
tenants in 1609 were James ‘Wynlaw’, John Scott
and Robert Brydon (also written ‘Altrive’, it was
formerly ‘Eltrieff’ and variants; it is ‘Eltreif’ in 1498 and ‘Eltrieve’ and ‘Elrieve’ in 1609).
