    • Olive K. Bryden Teacher and Church Member

      Olive K. Bryden, 95, a retired teacher who had been active in church groups, died of congestive heart failure Feb. 7 at the Presbyterian Home in Washington. A former Alexandria resident, she had lived in the home since 1987.

      Mrs. Bryden had been a first-grade teacher at St. Agnes Episcopal School in Alexandria from 1946 to 1958 and had taught a phonics course at the Primary Day School Institute in Bethesda in 1964.

      She had been a deaconess and women's association vice president of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, where her husband had served as a minister.

      Mrs. Bryden was born in Derry, Pa., and received an education degree from what is now Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to the Washington area in 1946, she had been a teacher and principal in Pennsylvania.

      She had done volunteer work for Meals-on-Wheels.

      Her husband, the Rev. James D. Bryden, whom she married in 1931, died in 1985.

      Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Bryden Ortega of Alexandria; a sister, Esther K. Hartle of Phillipsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A son, James Jr., died during the early 1980s.
