- Howard Beck of Scranton died Wednesday in VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife is Dorothy Gowarty Beck; the couple celebrated 55 years of marriage in January.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Howard A. Sr. and Edith Bryden Beck, he was a member of St. Ann's Basilica, educated in Scranton public schools and a graduate of West Scranton High School. Before retirement he was employed as a truck driver, having worked for numerous trucking companies in the area. Howard was a member of Teamsters Local 229 and the National Rifle Association.
Howard enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling to Canada, Colorado, Montana and other western states. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his house around the pool and sitting on his porch with his cats and smoking his pipe. He was a gun enthusiast, who customized gun stocks, and loved working with his hands. Howard was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of VNA Hospice and the 4th and 8th floor of Geisinger for the kind and compassionate care given to Howard and his family.
Surviving are two sons, Randy Beck and wife, Connie, Clarks Summit; and Jeffery Beck and wife, Erin, Elmhurst Twp.; two daughters, Debbie D'Amico and husband, Robert, Clarks Summit; and Sharon Saldonis and husband, John, Scranton; four grandchildren, Randy Beck Jr., Brandon Beck, Sarah D' Amico and Kyle Saldonis; and one brother, Edwin Beck and wife, Barbara, Indiana.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Beck; and one sister, Marion Calvey.
The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Ann's Basilica. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
